A Career Dedicated to the Classroom: Celebrating Jennifer Clark

03/31/20263 minutes

Jennifer Clark dedicated 38 years of her life to young students in Indiana before retiring in 2011. Her teaching journey began in 1973 at just 23 years old within the Mooresville school system, teaching at Waverly Elementary School. Starting out, she felt like she was a "kid teaching kids," which helped her relate to her students and build a fun, engaging environment. Over the decades, she taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades, initially as a general education teacher before eventually focusing on math during her final 10 years.

Adding Her Bright Personality to Learning

For Jennifer, being an educator meant infusing her unique personality into her lessons to show her students that learning can be fun. Her classes were known for their lively atmosphere; she would frequently bring in her favorite music and dance with the kids in her classroom. She also believed heavily in rewards and incentives, gamifying her math lessons and regularly handing out treats to students who could complete 100 multiplication problems in a single minute. A firm believer in making learning fun, she is remembered for always instilling that there is often more than one right way to find an answer.

Building Community and Lifelong Memories

Jennifer strongly believed that children learn best through memorable experiences. She warmly recalls organizing special classroom Thanksgiving parties where parents would bring in turkeys and dressing, as well as school-wide fall festivals where classrooms would run different games to bring the community together.

Beyond making learning fun, Jennifer made it a point to be involved in her students' lives outside of school, frequently attending their musical performances, basketball games and football games to better understand who they were outside the classroom.

Finding Time to Enjoy Family, Hobbies and Retirement

Upon retiring, Jennifer moved to Indianapolis to be closer to her children and help care for her grandchildren, including a set of twins and a 15-month-old. Her passion for education lives on through her daughter, Christina, an art teacher who shares her mother's charismatic personality and even dresses up as Frida Kahlo for her students. Today, Jennifer enjoys her free time by thrifting, visiting art museums and spending sunny days by the pool. She’s also earned a reputation as an expert baker, famous for her made-from-scratch lemon pound cakes.

The Vital Role of the Hoosier Lottery in Teacher Pensions

Jennifer's well-deserved retirement is supported by the Teachers' Retirement Fund. She acknowledges the Hoosier Lottery for contributing to the lives of dedicated classroom educators who often contribute their own hard-earned salary to reward and support their students over the course of their careers. Thanks to these retirement funds, lifelong educators like Jennifer can comfortably maintain their independence and enjoy the next chapter of their lives after giving so much to Indiana's youth.
